How Education Helps in Community Development

How Education Helps in Community Development

Community development is a process through which the community is empowered to understand, identify and act on needs in their environment. Education is one way of empowering people through knowledge-sharing.

When students receive the education that they require for achieving their goals, they are overall better contributors to the communities they call home.

Education assists motivated students to reach their potential and make an impact where they live. Their goals don’t necessarily have to be to become employed in social work or some other direct form of community involvement before their impact is felt by everyone around them.

Community development is significantly influenced by the level of education that its population undergoes and often they grow in tandem.

Becoming directly involved in the community

Typically, during a student’s education, they will learn about a variety of issues in their community and ways they can become involved through civic engagement.

Schools will often collaborate with non-profit organizations to enable students to contribute back to the community. For instance, in Canada, high-school students must volunteer in their communities before they can graduate. This relationship allows for mutual growth of the student and where they live.

Learning to be leaders

Leadership qualities are also something students are encouraged to learn during their education and in doing so, they learn to participate in the communities where they are interested. Learning leadership skills is something that is done by volunteering, participating in school clubs or teams, or in the classroom.

Presenting issues to students helps form their opinions and critical thinking skills so they can be motivated members of the community and effect change.

Additionally, schools reinforce the need for young students to be cognizant of their surroundings, form opinions, and make plans to contribute.

By their very definition, students are changing all the time, and when schools teach students to care and have a set of morals personal to them, they go out into the world motivated to make an impact.

Economic impact of educated students

Another aspect of community development that well-educated students provide, is an economic one. By having more degrees, certificates, and skills, students are able to take more profitable jobs and cultivate longer careers with greater earning potential.

As members of their community, educated and trained individuals have improved economic circumstances that allow them to contribute in a very basic way by patronizing the businesses in their community.

 Conclusion

A community that is educated is one that is motivated to address issues, make plans to change, and effect those changes.
